Insurance & fees

Nutrition counseling covered by Aetna, Cigna & BCBS PPO.

Most plans cover nutrition visits — often at no cost to you. We're in-network with Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield PPO and Cigna, and we accept HSA and FSA cards.

What your plan covers

Coverage varies by plan — here's what we see most often.

These notes reflect our experience with each insurer. They are not a guarantee of coverage: your specific plan and deductible decide what you pay, so it's always worth a quick call to the number on your card.

In-network

BlueCross BlueShield PPO

We're in-network with BCBS PPO plans, and most of them cover nutrition counseling with us. A doctor's referral is typically not required.

In-network

Cigna

We're in-network with Cigna, and a doctor's referral is typically not required. Cigna plans cover three nutrition visits per year. If you'd like to keep working together after that, the visits that follow are self-pay.

In-network

Aetna

We're in-network with Aetna, and most plans cover visits with us. A doctor's referral is required before your first nutrition visit — ask your primary care provider to send one over so we can get you scheduled.

Accepted

HSA & FSA

We accept HSA and FSA cards. Depending on your administrator, you may need a letter from your doctor confirming that nutrition counseling is medically necessary.

Telehealth

See us from home — and yes, it's usually covered.

Most of the plans we accept cover telehealth visits, so you can meet with your dietitian from wherever you are. Add telehealth to the questions you ask when you verify your benefits, so there are no surprises.

Where we can see you depends on the state you're in when we meet. Ask us and we'll tell you straight away whether we can work together.

Check my benefits

Six questions to ask your insurance company.

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask these. It takes about ten minutes and it's the single best way to avoid a surprise bill.

  • Do I have coverage for outpatient nutrition counseling — CPT codes 97802 and 97803?
  • Do I need a referral from my doctor before my first visit?
  • How many nutrition visits am I allowed per calendar year?
  • Does my deductible apply, and how much of it have I met?
  • Is there a copay or coinsurance for each visit?
  • Are telehealth nutrition visits covered the same way as in-person?

Please note

It is always your responsibility to confirm your own nutrition benefits before your visit. We're glad to help you read what you find — call us at 240-780-2418 or email admin@hayatnutritionandwellness.com.

Out-of-network

Don't see your plan? You still have options.

If we're not in-network with your insurer, you may still have out-of-network benefits. Call your insurance company and ask what they reimburse for outpatient nutrition counseling.

Once you've checked, we can give you a superbill — an itemised receipt with the diagnosis and procedure codes your insurer needs. You submit it to your insurance company directly, and they reimburse you according to your out-of-network benefits.

For out-of-network patients, payment is due at the time of service.

Payment & policies

How billing works.

  • We accept Zelle, credit and debit cards, and HSA or FSA cards.
  • An active credit or debit card on file is required to schedule an appointment.
  • Optional chat support between sessions is $125 per month. Insurance only covers face-to-face time with your dietitian, so this add-on is not covered.

If insurance declines

If your insurance declines to cover a visit for any reason, you are responsible for the full amount billed. Checking your benefits ahead of time is the best protection against that.
